Hairspray at Lawrenceville Arts Center

Overview

Pretty as a Penny Productions (PaaPP), founded by Atlanta actor and theatre artist Charlotte Banks, makes its debut this October with the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray, running October 2–24 at the Lawrenceville Arts Center. Banks also stars as Penny Pingleton in the production.

Set in 1962 Baltimore, Hairspray follows Tracy Turnblad as she lands a spot on a popular local TV dance show and uses her newfound platform to fight for integration, acceptance, and the right to dance. Full of big energy, beloved music, and heart, the musical celebrates community, inclusion, and dreaming big.

The production stars Darci Ann Combs-Garibay as Tracy Turnblad, Douglas McGeoch as Edna Turnblad, Layla Alyce as Motormouth Maybelle, Leo Thomasian as Link Larkin, KeVon J. Vernon as Seaweed J. Stubbs, as well as PaaPP’s founder Charlotte Banks as Penny Pingleton.

Directed by Jono Davis and Candy McLellan, with choreography by Annabelle Rose and music direction by Imani Quiñones, this inaugural PaaPP production brings together local and regional professional talent for a Broadway-style experience celebrating the Atlanta arts community.
