Gwinnett Celebrates Juneteenth

Juneteenth is so much more than America's newest (2021) federally observed holiday.

Also referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US.

The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. Now that we've gotten you up to speed, we encourage you to take the day to educate yourself, support local Black-owned businesses, volunteer or participate in community celebrations.
