Guide to Gwinnett

City Series: Snellville

And, we're back with our City Series! In this post, you'll hear all about the City of Snellville from Brian Arrington.

1.Describe your city in one word.

Proud! Snellville’s motto is “Where Everybody is Proud to be Somebody.” That saying is embodied by our staff and volunteers who strive to make Snellville a great place to live, work and play.

2. Tell me about any new developments that are happening.

The Towne Center @Snellville will provide the city with a downtown center our residents have asked for and our leaders are sure will draw visitors to by creating a viable, livable and walkable destination. Located in a square block near City Hall, the Towne Center will soon be under construction. When it’s all done, a state-of-the-art library, city market, unique shops, restaurants and new living quarters will add to our already exciting city.

3. What upcoming events are you most excited about and why?

Snellville Days – which is entering its 46th year – is May 4 and 5. It is our largest annual event and brings residents and visitors together in scenic T.W. Briscoe Park. It’s a two-day festival which offers entertainment, arts and crafts, food and more.

Another popular event is our Beach Blast which turns Oak Road in front of City Hall into a beach with 70 tons of sand for kids to play in. The event is 12 to 5 p.m. May 11 and is fun for those looking for fun in the sun without a drive to the coast.

4. What’s your favorite event and why?

I love our Memorial Day Celebration which takes place May 25 this year on the Towne Green. The city loves its veterans and honors those we lost during a ceremony from 5 to 6 p.m. in front of our renowned Veterans Memorial. We have speakers who talk about the sacrifices our military men and women have made and pay tribute to those we have lost. After the ceremony a music act rocks the Towne Green! It’s a good way to kick off summer while honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

5. Any must-try restaurants visitors should know about?

If you live near Snellville, it’s likely you’ve been to Provino’s on your birthday for a free meal. The Italian restaurant is a must-visit for those looking to celebrate their birthday with a Snellville tradition.

6. What are some unique outdoor/recreation experiences people can participate in?

Snellville's beautiful Briscoe Park has two softball fields, three playgrounds, four multi-purpose fields, two indoor rental rooms, four outdoor open-air pavilions, an outdoor pool, 1.2-mile paved walking trail, 6-acre lake, tennis courts, basketball courts and much more!

7. Where’s your favorite place to shop in the city?

Scenic Highway, also known as Highway 124, has a shopping district which boasts more than $1 billion in sales annually, rivaling the Mall of Georgia.

But on Saturdays in the summer, and the first Saturday of the month in the off-season, it’s the Snellville Farmers’ Market which brings locally grown foods from farms to the Towne Green.

8. What’s something people might not know about your city?

Snellville has had its share of movie and television shoots. The A&E series “Halt and Catch Fire” shot here and Mark Wahlberg was filmed in one of our many shopping plazas. We hope even more entertainment companies choose Snellville to film in soon!

There are so many fabulous things happening in Snellville. Be sure to keep and eye on our calendar of events so you don't miss a thing!
