The Seoul of the South

Along With Gods: The Two Worlds

By now, many of you may know that several local area theaters provide first runs of popular Korean and Asian movies. We are very fortunate to get these films for our enjoyment only a few weeks after they are released in Seoul, and AMC Sugarloaf Mills is a great spot to grab a bite to eat and check out the latest blockbuster from Asia.

Over the holiday break, I had the opportunity to watch Along with the Gods, directed by Yong-Hwa Kim and starring Korean stars Jung-Woo Ha, Tae-Hyun Cha, and Jung-Jae Lee. This fantasy journey features lots of CGI as the story follows a firefighter killed in the line of duty as his journey into the realms after life. Following in today's popular tradition of adapting comics to the big screen, Along with the Gods is a hugely popular web comic in Korea that has been brought to life for audiences to enjoy at home and abroad. While some of the animated effects are overdone and distracting, the film is a touching story about family, dedication, and sacrifice that is guaranteed not to leave any dry eyes in the theater.

If you are in the mood to try something different one evening, it's just short drive from many of the Korean restaurants in Gwinnett. I recommend taking in the film, and then heading over to the Assi Plaza on Old Peachtree Road to satisfy your craving for Korean friend chicken or BBQ. On cold days, there is also a shabu shabu or soon dubu (spicy silken tofu stew) to warm you up. That is definitely my idea of a great night out in Gwinnett!
