2016 Mitsubishi Electric Classic

The Mitsubishi Electric Classic, a PGA TOUR Champions event, will return to the Metro Atlanta area April 11-17, 2016.

This 54-hole stroke play tournament will feature 81 PGA TOUR Champions professionals competing for a $1.8 million purse at the prestigious TPC Sugarloaf. We spoke to Stan Hall, Executive Director of the Gwinnett Sports Commission, about all of the exciting events and opportunities taking place at this year’s tournament.

What’s something new or different that’s going on this year?
One of the things that we are excited about this year is the expanded Mellow Mushroom Chill Club on the 16th green. Mellow Mushroom, our sponsor, is pulling out all of the stops to make this a great place to watch the tournament and new this year is the Michelob Ultra Patio. In addition to receiving some swag with your ticket, you’ll also receive a meal provided by Mellow Mushroom and one alcoholic beverage or Coca-Cola product. Be on the lookout for beer specials in this tent too!

There are a lot of events that take place around the tournament. What events are you most excited for this year?
I love the State Bank Kickoff Party on Tuesday night at the Infinite Energy Center. This event has become Gwinnett’s “must be seen at” social event of the Spring. It’s just a great party, great food, a silent auction and a chance to meet some of our professionals who mingle among the crowd. Georgia United Credit Union Executive Women’s Day is also looking great this year. Our keynote speaker is Molly Fletcher, who is known as “the female Jerry McGuire” and she’ll be joined by three high-powered panelists from metro Atlanta. Tickets for both events are available through the tournament website.

Volunteers are a huge part of this event. Can you give us a few reasons people should consider volunteering?
Our volunteers are the backbone of our event. We have over 600 volunteers who assist us each year in putting on this event. Aside from the great service that they provide for us, it is a great opportunity for those who love golf and love to volunteer to combine those passions together.

"Our volunteers are the backbone of our event."

They interact with our wonderful fans and do all they can to provide the best experience possible. We also reward them with some really cool swag in our uniforms, great tickets and all that they can eat while they are with us. The best reason to volunteer is that proceeds from the uniform package go to help our benefiting charities, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation.

One reason people should attend MEC 2016?
Obviously to see the greatest names in golf. These are the people who made golf the great game that it is today. Plus, they are still uber competitive. I’ve got my favorite, but I’ll keep that to myself! Spring in Atlanta is a beautiful time, and if you like being outside, the Mitsubishi Electric Classic is the place to be.

So, whether you’re interested in volunteering or spending the day watching some of greatest golfers compete, the 2016 Mitsubishi Electric Classic is a not-to-be-missed event!
