Where do I even begin explaining the unique-ness of this quaint, swanky shop in downtown Duluth?
When you enter Uni'k Hand Creations, you're immediately drawn to the countless beaded pieces of jewelry that adorn the tables. There are so many shapes, colors and sizes, which is why I was shocked to learn that Heidi Medrano, owner and designer, makes all the pieces herself right there in the store.
"It all started when I was younger and noticed I was allergic to different types of jewelry and metal," she explained. "One day I realized I could make my own pieces and know that they were safe for my skin. It just took off from there."
No matter what type of jewelry you're looking for, Uni'k Hand Creations has got it. Heidi makes beaded bracelets in any color you can imagine with several types of gemstones. Many of the beaded bracelets include inspirational messages and notes. The store also carries necklaces and earrings created from a variety of materials.
The gemstones Heidi works with all have different meanings and properties. For example, amethyst increases vivid dreams, relieves depression and promotes calm, serenity and spirituality. It also helps with stress (we could all use an amethyst, am I right?). If you purchase a piece made with Jasper, once considered a Warriors Stone, it exudes loyalty, inner strength and standing up for what you believe in.
"The meanings and properties make it so that each bracelet or necklace is not just a piece of jewelry," Heidi said. "The significance puts energy behind all the pieces, and I love that."
Each color of jewelry also symbolizes something different. For instance, red represents action, confidence and courage, and green is a sign of life, nature, self-respect and well-being.
